Cognitive reserve isn’t a gene lottery
Your brain won’t “just hold on” until retirement. Reserve is the sum of daily choices that either bank or burn.
Most people assume clarity will somehow last. Cognitive longevity isn’t only genes. It’s sleep, movement, blood pressure and sugar, effortful thinking — and honesty about what steals memory every day.
Miracle pills sell hope. A protocol sells boring: regular, measurable, no panic at 40, 50, 60+. Brain at 100+ is that: A–D evidence, no magic.
What builds reserve in practice
Sleep as base. Movement that raises heart rate. Complexity: language, tool, task without autopilot. Social contact without the feed. Less chronic fog from debt of rest.
Three times this week: 20 minutes of something slightly harder than comfort (not a work deadline). Instrument, language, puzzle without hints. Brains need effort load — like muscles.
